Heurigen in the rain----Emily?

We are here in Vienna for a week and were looking forward to a Heuriger experience. The weather does not look promising. We do not mind walking in the rain ( did that all day today), but I imagine the outdoor spaces in the Heurigen will not be open. Are there places with nice indoor or covered space where one can enjoy wine and a casual meal in spite of the rain--on a weeknight?

The hueringer I'm familiar with on the outskirts of Vienna all had quiet a bit of indoor seating. When we were there in the summer most people ate and drank outside but they were very well set up for indoor eating and drinking also. I'm sure Emily will be able to tell you some specifics when she wakes up today!

This is a very nice Heurigen with sufficient indoor capacity, and easily reachable by public transport: http://10ermarie.at/

By the way, this is believed to be the oldest Heurigen in Vienna. Closed on Sundays. There you get a delicious variant of "Wiener Schnitzel", called "Surschnitzel", i.e. the meat is seasoned with a special marinade before being breaded.

The homepage is available in German, only. Beware: In the section "Anreise" (how to get there) replace all references to tram line no. 2 with line no. 44. There was a switch of tram lines about two weeks ago, and they have not updated the information, yet.

Lola - the weather on Thursday, Friday and especially Saturday look good!

Feuerwehr Wagner (D Tram and short walk or a few stops on the 38A bus) has a nice indoor and outdoor (covered) space. Good good too. http://www.feuerwehrwagner.at/english/home.html

I would strongly suggest allocating a heuriger experience (Kahlenberg view, Mayer am Nussdorf, Stadtwanderweg 1) for Saturday so you get the full experience. To walk down through the vineyards when they are full of grapes is pretty special.

Thanks! It does look like the forecast has improved. I think we will go tonight just for dinner, while my sister and her husband are still here with us. Then my husband and I will go again on Saturday late in the afternoon for the walk and a more casual experience.

Lola - I wanted to also mention to you that the Wiener Wiesn Fest (Vienna Oktoberfest) starts this weekend at the Prater. It’s kind of a new event, but Austrians love any excuse to put on the Tracht. Lots of beer hall tents, but I think reservations are a must.
