Hello, My family and I are making our way thru Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic in June 2019. We will be traveling by car while in between the large cities. After watching one of RS shows on Hallstatt I am hooked and feel like I would regret not going and spending the night. This last minute change has thrown a wrench in our travel plans. We had originally planned for a full day to visit to Chiemsee and a full day visit to Berchtesgaden (Kehlsteinhaus). Is it feasible to do both of these sites in one day if you have your own car?
If starting in Hallstatt, I’d say no. Try to squeeze in Hohenwerfen or Hohensalzburg with the Kehlstein from Hallstatt.
Both Herrenchiemsee and Kehlsteinhaus must be reached by public transportation (ferry in the first case, bus in the second). This means visits are not very fast - visiting Herrenchiemsee will take all the morning if you manage to board the 9am ferry run, even more if you take it easy.
We just went to Chiemsee and it takes a minimum of 2 1/2 hours if you rush but it was about a one hour tour, not rushed like Neuschwanstein and well worth the stop.

You can do it in long day, but rethink Hallstatt. The Michelin Guide properly gives Hallstatt ** stars and the nearby Gosausee *** (deserves ******). Hallstatt is mobbed: nobody ever heard of the far better Gosausee.
Thank you so much for the replys. I will have to check into Gosausee. I was definitely struggling with the reviews regarding the hoards of Asian tour buses. We were very put off when visiting the Palace of Versaille because of this same issue. I have always joked that I needed a xanax to be able to go to Disney World because of the crazy amount of people in my personal space. Disney World was nothing compared to standing in the hall of mirrors with a 1000 people staring up at me. (I am 5'10 and the average height in there was about 5'5) Luckily I could see over most of them but all the selfie sticks were a little hazardous at times.
