Hello, i was hoping to get some advice as to which part of town is best to stay in while visiting Vienna . I am travelling with 2 other friends, and we only have Saturday to Monday in Vienna before we head to Italy. I am wanting to stay in a hotel near the city center. does anyone have any suggestions? Also can anyone recommend some nice restaurants/ roof top bars . We plan to sight see during the day and try to enjoy some of the nightlife of Vienna as well.

I have stayed at Hotel Austria twice. Absolutely love it. It is about 7 minutes from St. Stephens and very close to a couple different metro stops. http://www.hotelaustria-wien.at/
Best area is the center, as you have already noted. There are dozens of hotels in the First District (area within the Ring) with postal code 1010. Knowing your budget and dates would help me make the best recommendations.
Rooftop Bars - Cafe Bar Bloom at the Lamee Hotel, Atmosphere at the Ritz Carlton, Dachboden at the 25 Hours Hotel, 57 Restaurant and Lounge at the Melia Hotel, Das Loft in the Sofitel, Sky Bar, Motto am Fluss (on the Danube Canal), Mayer am Nussberg (on a hillside).
Nice Restaurants - Mraz and Sohn, Glacis Beisl, Heuer am Karlsplatz
We had a great stay at Hollmann Beletage and thoroughly enjoyed a nice dinner at Labstelle.
