Help with Durnstein

Hello folks
On 28/07 we are driving from Salzburg to Hallstatt and stopping the night.
On the 29/07 my partner and i are stopping at the Schafbergspitze hotel at St Wolfgang, we have a hire car and on the 30/07 we intend to drive to Durnstein where we have a hotel booked. My plan then is to ditch the car and travel to Melk (by public transport or bike ?) and tour the monastery, in time to catch the 16.25 boat to Durnstein. Does that seem a doable idea ? If not, how could manage our time better ?

On the 31/07 we are travelling back to Salzburg to drop off the car, i was considering stopping off at Mauthausen concentration camp but could alter plans dependent on suggestions.

Cheers

Your plan seems reasonable. There are hourly bus services from Dürnstein to Melk along the river. There is a road tunnel underneath the village, with bus stops at each end. The road runs right along the river bank, so you might decide that the bus journey is scenic enough that it's not worth paying for the boat and just get the bus both ways.

PS: Make sure your hotel has a guest car park. I travelled by public transport when I did the Wachau, but the public car parks looked expensive.

Cheers Phillip, that puts my mind at ease. I've heard the boat ride is well worth it but like you say i may be happy to return by bus (or might spend more time in Melk). Thanks a lot.
