Help with Austria leg of trip

My partner and i are travelling from the UK to Germany by train on the 17th July and after various stops we are arriving in Salzburg from Berchtesgaden on 24/07 and stopping for two nights, up to this point our travel will be by train. I fancy hiring a car to leave Salzburg on the 28/07 to travel to Hallsatt where we will stop the night and on the 29/07 we were thinking of stopping at the hotel on top of Schafberg mountain - Schafbergspitze hotel, i would then like to travel the next day to Vienna, stopping at Melk/Durnstein along the way.

My itinerary is fixed up to Salzburg but fluid from there, would i be best returning to Salzburg, dropping hire car back and then taking the train to Melk and then a boat down to Durnstein ? Or should i keep the car and drive to Vienna and drop car off soon as i get there ? I also have the option of stopping another night, somewhere between Hallstatt/St Wolfgang and Vienna, would this be advisable/worthwhile ?

Thanks in advance

Paul

Once you have the car in Austria, it probably doesn't change the cost much to keep it all the way to Vienna. Pre-booking car rentals often costs the same for 1, 2, or 3 days.

After taking a couple of train trips April, 2014, we quickly figured out other modes of transportation suit us better. We were somewhat bored and would hate to think how hot trains might be in July. From the U.K. to Salzburg's a long, long way.
Budget air carriers are cheaper than long distance train travel, and they allow us to stay longer in other great European cities--or more great cities without breaking the bank. EasyJet flies to Munich for about $75 one way. It's a straight shot into Salzburg by train from Munich.

There, you could rent a car and hit the Austrian Alps--turning the car in upon your arriving in Vienna. You could also stay in the countryside. Austria has absolutely stunning scenery--about as beautiful as it gets.

Hello David

Sorry i should of made clear, my partner cannot fly, she fears it so much but we travelled to Germany and around last year and i actually prefer it, we have a month to get around so its not so hurried, to get to Salzburg we are going London-Brussels-Nurenburg-Colmberg-Munich-Berchtesgaden with stops in all, even the journey we enjoy, gives us reading time/reflection time and theres always beer time !

After Salzburg i have decided to hire a car and drive to Hallsatt stop 1 night, go to St Wolfgang stop 1 night and finally a night at Durnstein stop 1 night before checking in and dropping car off in Vienns.

Cheers

Paul
