Hi. I am planning a trip for my family of 4 (with 2 kids, 5 and 8) to Vienna for a week. We are coming from Paris and have 7-8 days. My plan was to take a train from Paris to Vienna. Do you have any advise on what to do or stop on this journey from Paris to Vienna? The places I saw along the way were Munich, Fussen (castle), Salzburg. Any ideas of what is possible to do without being too hectic? We would like to spend a few days in Vienna as well with friends. Thank you in advance
I would just fly. So much easier - that is a very long train ride.
Salzburg I guess. Personally I would fly then split the stay between Vienna and Budapest. I can send you things to do with kids in Budapest if you are interested.
You have also the night train option, Paris to Vienna, a relatively new option available, one I most likely will be taking in June either direct or breaking it up twice en route.
If considering the Nightjet train, be aware that it only travels from Paris to Vienna on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. It returns to Paris on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Fly, as Emily says. It's not expensive and that's a really long time on the train.
The distance from Paris to Vienna is roughly the same distance as New York to Chicago. You would fly that distance, right?
Also with kids, being in the train that long (even if you break it up) will be so boring.
Direct flights take a little less than two hours and this is a fairly inexpensive route. Plus you don't have to go through any immigration at either airport.

That never occurred to me when I was planning our 2015 Paris to Vienna journey! We spent a couple of nights in Strasbourg for a taste of Alsace, 4 nights in Munich, and finally 5 nights in Vienna. We had a great trip, but I would have liked more time in Vienna.
