Hallstatt to Vienna travel

Anyone traveled to Vienna from Hallstatt? What are my options?

I'm trying to decide if I should travel to Salzburg - Hallstatt - Vienna or Hallstatt - Salzburg - Vienna. I will be coming from Cesky Krumlov.

I know there is a direct train to Vienna from Salzburg but having difficulty finding info on travel to Vienna from Hallstatt. I need info on price, mode of transportation and time.

Any help is appreciated.

krissyar there is no rail station in Halstatt. You have to take a boat across the lake to the town with the rail station. The name escapes me now. Its not a big deal to do so.

Yes, thank you. I knew about the train station and having to cross the lake via the Stephanie ferry. I'm just trying to figure out how long it would take me to get to Vienna from Hallstatt. Train, bus, combo? How many transfers, cost, etc.

To get to Vienna from Hallstatt, you have to take the train with 1 connection in a place called Attnang-Puchheim.

To get to Salzburg from Hallstatt, you can either take the train with 1 connection in Attnang-Puchheim again, or you can take the train to Bad Ischl and then connect to a bus which will take you from Bad Ischl to Salzburg.

The Austrian train website - www.oebb.at/en/ - is great and will show you what your options are if you input your start and end points and do "Search Connection."

You do search to/from Hallstatt on the OEBB or DB train schedules. They don't reflect the boat connection, but do use that town name for the train schedule, despite it being on the other side of the lake.

Just to clarify, there is a Hallstatt Rail Station but it's across the lake from the town. Travel from the station to Hallstatt is via boat Stefanie. Hallstatt is not on a direct rail line, and often requires changes at Attnang-Pucheim whether travelling from either Salzburg or Vienna.

The Salzburg > Hallstatt > Vienna route is probably the one I'd use. You can check the train schedules and other details on the bahn.de website. Post another note if you need suggestions.
