Hey all,
We will be driving from Hallstatt to Vienna in a few weeks. Maps says to use 113 or A1-- are either of these more scenic? Or is there another route that is suggested for the drive? We're looking for scenic more than fastest drive.
Thanks!
ViaMichelin has three routes, but I don’t know how scenic they are: https://www.viamichelin.com/web/Routes?departure=4830%20Hallstatt%2C%20Upper%20Austria%2C%20Austria&departureTid=city-1006749&arrival=1010%20Vienna%2C%20Vienna%2C%20Austria&arrivalTid=city-1018682&index=0&vehicle=0&type=0&distance=km¤cy=EUR&highway=false&toll=false&vignette=false&orc=false&crossing=true&caravan=false&shouldUseTraffic=false&withBreaks=false&break_frequency=7200&coffee_duration=1200&lunch_duration=3600&diner_duration=3600&night_duration=32400&car=hatchback&fuel=petrol&fuelCost=1.451&allowance=0&corridor=&departureDate=&arrivalDate=&fuelConsumption=6.8:5.6:5.6&shouldUseNewEngine=false.
The A1 is not scenic. It is a massive highway known for traffic jams.
Not sure where road 113 is, but from Hallstatt, the southerly route via Bad Aussee, the A9, and the S6 will be more scenic and hardly slower than the A1.
The A9/S6 route is also the one I saw recommended on TA as the most scenic route, but I didn't look for it on the map to see where it went or how long it took.
Route numbers starting with A or S are freeways (Autobahn/Schnellstraße) and very limited to scenic views. Residents along these routes are complaining about the noise. Therefore you will find noise barriers along considerable distances preventing any view.
