Hallstatt to Fussen via Public Transportation

We (2 adults) are travelling from Hallstatt to Fussen on June 8 and will not have a car. Researching the ticket options on the OeBB website, I'm having trouble entering this itinerary. Is this because of the cross-border travel? I believe the train takes us back to Salzburg and then on to Munich, with the final destination being Fussen (per Rome2Rio). I've also tried the German Bahn website without much success. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide and/or suggestions for saving on the cost of the tickets. We will also need to travel from Fussen to Munich on June 10.

I'm not surprised that you would have to go back to Salzburg, there just aren't as many train lines as there are roads.

You’re trying to go from one remote area to another remote area, with a bunch of mountains in between. Trains generally route through big hubs (Salzburg, Munich). There are so many awesome places near Salzburg, I wouldn’t waste the time to go to Fussen.

Don't trust Google Maps too much regarding public transport.

The route from Hallstatt to Füssen is tricky. As it requires several changes, I would recommend minimizing the number of changes.

That's what I found doing a quick search:

Hallstatt Bahnhst, train REX 3415, dep. 10:32, arriving 10:52 at Bad Ischl (Bahnhof)
Bad Ischl (Busterminal), bus 150, dep. 10:54, arriving 12:26 at Salzburg Hbf
Salzburg Hbf, train WB 964, dep. 12:39, arriving 14:13 at München Hbf
München Hbf, train RB68, dep. 14:40, arriving 16:45 at Füssen

This makes three changes and a total travel time of about 6:30 hours, when you add the time of the ferry between Hallstatt town and its train station.

Theoretically you can go by trains only, i.e. Hallstatt - Attnang-Puchheim - Salzburg - Munich - Füssen, but then you have only 8 minutes in Munich for the change. Given the size of the train station in Munich and its historical layout of platforms I doubt that you could make it.

Going back to Munich from Füssen is no big deal as there are direct trains available.

Thank you wtml! This is exactly the information and advice I was looking for. I also found that by typing "Fuessen" with the added "e" into the OeBB website, that the schedules popped up.

We are going to Fussen to see the castles before we head home and hopefully, to enjoy the surrounding scenery. It will be an adventure, although I agree it is probably not ideal to spend a day travelling on our vacation. We were so close to the castles, that we didn't want to skip them.
