I am looking at a trip to Germany/Austria in February/March 2017.
I am thinking about renting a car for some of the trip, I should drive to Hallstatt or take the train and what their is the see in Hallstatt in February.

Hallstatt will probably not be the best location in February, probably somewhat cold and wet. Also, not all of the hotels and other facilities may be open. March may be a bit better.

you might want to check if the salt mine is open at that time of year? its undergound so may well be. we found it interesting to visit.

I was planning on touring the salt mine, and as suggested I checked the tour dates...it appears they don't start tours until April, so may need to do this another time.
