Hallstatt in April?

Hello,

We are considering spending a couple of nights in Hallstatt in mid-April, though much of what I can find out outline so far cautions that the weather is not very good. We aren't worried too much about having to dress warmly, but we would like to see the views and do some hiking. Is this a good idea in April? Have any of you been to Hallstatt in April, and was it a positive experience?

Thank you!!

(I apologize if this is covered in the guidebook. We haven't booked our airline tickets yet and are considering a few other destinations instead if this one doesn't work, so we haven't gotten it yet!)

The weather in Austria is so variable it's difficult to say. In August I've had it 14 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees. Hallstatt isn't particularly high. Maybe there will be some snow on the hill tops but it could make for great photos. I wouldn't let it discourage you. Springtime is a beautiful time in the mountains.

Thank you! I think that is what I needed to hear... Hallstatt is a place that has captured my imagination for years now, and it would be such a memorable trip!

We only have 1 week (we have small children and it's the longest we can leave them with Grandma and Grandpa); here are the other destinations we are considering for such a short trip:
- Iceland
- Budapest
- Belgium

But, I thought that Vienna/Hallstatt or Munich/Salzburg/Hallstatt might be doable in one week, so long as it isn't a bad time to visit that corner of the world!

As for hiking in the mountains (Alps), check to see what lifts are still running after the ski season and whether the hiking paths are accessible with the remaining snow. April is the time many places are closed for a pause until late Spring after the ski season. This might drive your decision for where to go as far as Europe and mountains.

Hallstatt is a year round destination. It is pretty in the rain and it is pretty in the sun. The longer you spend in Hallstatt, the greater your chances of sun will be. There is really no hiking in Hallstatt itself, so you'll need to get out a bit to a location like Gosausee. I would suggest renting a car in Vienna and driving to Hallstatt.

Thank you, mchpp -- that's great advice! I'll look into the lift situation.

Emily -- that makes total sense. We can experience the charm of Hallstatt all year round, even if we stay closer to the town instead of doing more hiking.

Thank you for your input!

I’d fly into and out of Munich. Rent a car. Base yourself in St. Gilgen for a few nights. Make Hallstatt a day trip on a sunny day from here. Very easy to do, maybe an hour drive. While based in St. Gilgen, take a lake ship and cruise the Wolfgangsee for a day visiting St. Wolfgang and Strobl. Hehnwerfen is a must see for many while in the area. Hallein Salt Mine, Werfen Ice Caves, Berchtesgaden and the area, Konigssee, the Rossfeld Road, etc., etc. Then maybe head to Garmisch or Mittenwald for a few nights.before heading to Munich and home.

We visited Hallstatt, spent a day on the Wolfgangsee, which was very nice, drove the Rossfeld Panorama Road, etc. from our base near Berchtesgaden. Basing in St. Gilgen makes visiting all theses and Salzburg very simple.
