Hallstatt from Salzburg, car or train?

Which is easier?

Rome2Rio.com says you can drive it in just over an hour, but bus and train both take about 2:30. I have no idea how accurate that driving-time estimate is.

Robert,

Are you planning to go there just for a day trip, or to stay for a few days? While it may be quicker to travel from Salzburg to Hallstatt by car, having a car will be of limited use since you'll have to leave it parked at Lahn and walk to your hotel with luggage.

Hi Robert,
We drove from Hallstatt to Salzburg last summer and it took about 90 minutes. There was some vacation traffic around some of the more popular lakes between the two towns but it was a beautiful drive. The train takes longer.
We stopped at Hallstatt on the way from Vienna to Salzburg. A couple of hours was plenty to see the town. We didn't take the time to go out on to the lake in a rented boat or on one of the larger passenger boats which I think would be a lovely thing to do if you have the time.
It's an easy day trip.
The only advantage to spending the night is to see the town without the hoards of tourists that are there during the day - it's breathtaking how many people were there. A bit like Disneyland at Christmas.

we're staying for two days in Hallstatt. Ive driven in Europe quite a bit so I am not worried about getting lost or traffic. It's more about which would be an easier pace. I think the station closest to Hallstatt is across the lake, and I am worried about the other tourists and the amount of people traveling their and getting lost in the mix.
