We will be in Salzburg mid September. We are thinking of doing a day trip to Hallstatt. I've heard some bad experiences with overcrowding during the summer months. Does anyone have any experiences doing a day trip this time of year?

I plan to take a day trip to Hallstatt when I'm in Salzburg next year with Bob's. Yes, it will be crowded, but most places are these days. That's not reason enough for me to avoid places I'd like to see.

We were there the last week in September a few years ago. It wasn't that crowded during our Tue/Wed visit, but guessing over the weekend (and early-Sep dates) that might not be the case. Would definitely recommend seeing Hallstatt as it is a truly unique and beautiful place, but plan for midweek (and towards the end of your Salzburg stay) to increase the odds for a better experience.

I arrived Tuesday 10 September and left Thursday 12 September last year. I'm glad i spent 2 nights. No crowds at all.
