Hallstatt day trip from Salzburg Question

Will be in Salzburg in mid-May and am planning on making a day trip to Hallstatt. Planning on leaving Salzburg as early in the morning as reasonably possible, still haven’t checked bus or train schedules yet.

Question is about time. Is there time to spend part of the day in Hallstatt, go up the Dachstein cable car for hiking, and make it back to Salzburg in the evening? Won’t have the extra day to spend and would like to go up the mountain if time permits. Not really interested in the ice caves, more for the hiking around the area, limited as it might be.

I suppose when you check the train and bus schedules, and then the travel time to the Dachstein and time to go up and down (and hike), you will have your answer. Hallstatt itself is worth the day. If you have good weather, and the Dachstein is your priority, do it first and give the village the time that is left. Your plan is a bit ambitious. There are other mountains for another day, perhaps?

Yes, it can be done in one day.
We went up the side of the mountain and took the salt mine tour. If you hiked for 2 hrs instead, still enough time.
