Hallstatt Day Trip

Is Hallstatt do-able as a day trip from Munich? I see it's about a 4 hour train ride if I leave Munich real early. Is it worth it for a day trip?

What's it worth to get to Hallstatt, check it off on your list, say "Hallstatt, check", and leave. Do you just want to say you've been there, or I do you actually want to experience being in Hallstatt. Quality vs Quantity.

Personally, I think 8 hours of travel time is way too much for a day trip. I've never been to Hallstatt, and it definitely looks beautiful, but I would save it for another time. Especially because it looks like you'd have 2 changes with short connection times, and if you miss one then everything snowballs.

Have you considered Salzburg as a day trip? It's only 1.5-2 hours each way, and is a great town.

We didn't spend a lot of time in Hallstatt once we got there because it was freezing cold, literally, and almost everything was closed (I think it was a Sunday). But it was beautiful and still well worth the trip, but we were coming from Salzburg, much shorter. Also, it is quite off the beaten path. The train drops you off in pretty much the middle of no where and then you take a boat over. I am not sure when the latest train leaves, but you wouldn't want to miss the last train so if time is going to be tight, you might want to schedule it for another day or like someone else said, go from Salzburg, like we did. Plus there is so much to see around Munich!

Thanks for the info. I like to return to Europe each year and sounds like I'll leave this for another trip and look to stay maybe a week around Austria itself.
