The name of the town is Obertraun (no S). I think either town has plenty of hiking possibilities.

From Hallstatt you can climb the steep switchback trail from town to Rudolfsturm, at the top of the incline. From there it looks like the hiking trails back to the salt mine and further into the valley above Hallstatt are fairly flat. Or you can take the incline up to Rudolfsturm and hike from there. But there are also hiking trails around Obertraun and from the various stations of the cable cars that go up to the Dachstein ice caves.

But the towns are so close to each other and connected by regular bus service from Lahn to Obertraun. You could do any of the hikes from either place. It would probably be more interesting to stay in Hallstatt, but you might find more reasonably priced accommodations in Obertraun. And don't ignore Lahn. It's at the foot of the incline to Rudolfsturm and the bus to Obertraun starts there (you need to walk a ½ km along the lakeside pedestrian road from Hallstatt to get to Lahn. There are plenty of accommodations in Lahn. (You can also take the boat across the lake to the Hallstatt bahnhof, from which it is a short train ride to Obertraun.)
