We are a traveling traveling to prague and Vienna during the 1st week of March, we want to do hallstatt as a day trip and wanted to also combine gmunden if possible in the day trip.

Vienna to Hallstatt is about 4 hours either by train or car so that's a long way to go for a day trip. Gmunden is on the way to Hallstatt so you could combine a short visit to each of them but it would be very short visits and make for a very long day. Not sure it would be worth it to me to go that far for a day trip to either, let alone both, but it's entirely up to you how much travel time you want to spend on a day trip.

Hallstatt is not really a day trip from Vienna. It can be done from Salzburg.
