I've read all the posts about the crowds in Hallstatt. Are their towns of similar, perhaps slightly less charm, which have escaped the throngs of visitors?
No "town" per se, I have never been here but I will visit one day. None of the bells and whistles of Hallstatt.

You could look into Montafon valley Silbertal too.

What about Zell am See. I can see some resemblance and little bit fewer visitors.
The trick with Hallstatt is to spend a night there between other stops. Spend the late afternoon, evening, and the next morning enjoying the ambiance. Avoid the mid day day-trippers and tour busloads.
Haven't been to Zell am See, but just looked at some images. Mostly saw a huge modern hotel on the edge of the water. Not much like Hallstatt.
Zell is for tourists from the Gulf what Hallstatt is for tourists from China.
That's highly unfortunate. When I was there some years ago there was no huge modern hotel there.
That is very true, Hallstatt has fewer accomodations and Zell has in town as well as surrounding area for accomodations.

Craig,
I found that while Hallstatt can be a bit "busy" during the day with tour bus groups and day trippers, it's fairly tranquil and quiet at night. I didn't find the crowds to be problematic. It's one of the most beautiful locations I've been to in Europe, and I wouldn't hesitate to return there.
Gmunden, St. Gilgen, Steyr, Gosausee. I would still just plan on staying the night and enjoying the town sans crowds.
