Hallstatt advice

We will be in Hallstatt for an overnight stay. Any suggestions for hotels, B&Bs, activities, sights, etc. I will be traveling with two children, 4 and 7. Thanks in advance for your input. I have posted a few times here and have received lots of good advice.

I'll be visiting Hallstatt for an overnight too. I found the website below; it looks chock-full of suggestions for fun stuff to do.

In planning my 4-week trip, I have had a lot of good luck finding accommodations at Booking.com. I found a very good deal on a room with private bath (Pension Maria Theresia) in a nearby town - Bad Goisern - about a 15 minute drive to Hallstatt and literally a quarter of the price of hotels in Hallstatt.

Enjoy!

I would stay in Hallstatt and you can park on the waterfront in the core of the town then you don't have to drive from another town and when the sun goes down the day trippers leave and the town becomes tranquil.I stayed in Gasthof Zauner which is right off of the main square and the owner was very friendly and the rooms were clean as well as a good breakfast. The main attraction is the salt mine tour and the bone church and a ride on the lake, very relaxing.

jh,

Hallstatt is a very small town, so accommodations are a bit limited. If you have a "generous" budget, you could have a look at Hotel Grüner Baum and I'm sure you'll be VERY comfortable there. If your budget is more moderate, another good choice is Gasthof Simony, which is right next door to Grüner Baum.

For "activities, sights, etc.", have a look at the Guidebook. The main attraction there is the Salt Mine, which is older than Rome. There's a small Museum there also. It's one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Europe, so the scenery is a "sight" too.

If you're driving, I'm not sure you'll be able to "park on the waterfront in the core of the town" as cars are not allowed in Hallstatt (AFAIK). From what I've seen, drivers have to park in Lahn (at one end of town) and then walk to their hotel.

we had a lovely stay in Hallstatt , this time last year. we stayed at Hotel gruner Baum and we did indeed have to park just at the edge of town in the multi level car park. there is a free hotel shuttle. so we did not have to carry our bags. it was very good when the day trippers leave for the day. it was nice just to walk around the town. we enjoyed the salt mine tour. the large 'slippery dips' inside the mine were an experience. your kids might enjoy that.

hope this helps.

Here's a link to where we stayed last fall. It was about a 15 minute walk into the main part of town.Fortunately,it's not on top of the hills that surround the lake. You can just leave your car there since there is pretty much no parking in the town which is closed to cars. Just beware that it's really over-crowded with busloads of tourists. Quite frankly,it's over-rated.
