My wife and I plan on spending a week or so in the Salzburg area in 2020. We will have a car and would like to use Hallein as a "base camp" for daytrips to various locations around the area. Recommendations for a clean comfortable place to stay would be greatly appreciated.
Why Hallein? We stayed in Gmunden, which is not only more beautiful, but being located right in the "Salzkammergut" a better starting point for excursions.
We had a room with lake view - ask for it - in this hotel directly at the lakeside promenade:

No particular reason for choosing Hallein -- just looked like a convenient "jumping off" place. I will certainly look into your recommendation. Any recommendations for other locations are certainly welcome too!
St Gilgen (particularly) and Mondsee are nice spots and also give you easy and fairly quick access to Gmunden/Traunsee, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Berchtesgadener Land and Chiemsee.
Small villages like St. Gilgen are very scenic and beautiful, but you have seen the whole "city" in less than a half day. Should there be bad weather, you are better off in a larger town, e.g. like Gmunden, which offers some indoor activites, like the "Museum of Historic Sanitary Ceramics" (aka Toilet Museum).
As you will have a car, I suggest a farm stay. High standard of accommodation with local flavor - https://sbgl.urlaubambauernhof.at/farms/
Stay somewhere beautiful with views.
I can recommend Landhaus Armstorfer. We stayed there last summer. It was amazing. Perfectly clean, gorgeous views, and a peaceful place to come “home” to. It’s a 10 minute drive to Salzburg, or 20 minute bus or train ride. It’s about 25 minutes to Berchtesgaden and an hour to Hallstatt.
