Halfway stop between Vienna and Salzburg, by car

We are traveling by car from Vienna to Salzburg and Tirol and have a couple days open. What’s your favorite place to visit between these two cities and why? We like history and walks and good food. We plan to stop in Krems and Durnstein.

Thanks, as always.

Not halfway, but definitely worth a stop, especially if you can spend a night: Hallstatt. Tons of history, beautiful town & lake, salt mine.

... spend a night: Hallstatt. Tons of history, ...

And tons of tourists, too.

If you want to explore the Salzkammergut area, don't choose Hallstatt as a base, especially not when traveling by car.
I like Gmunden very much, but Bad Ischl is also a very good choice.

If you’re stopping in Krems and Duernstein, then you must stop in Melk. Nothing else is as good as this between Salzburg and Vienna.

Steyr is often overlooked. The area around Traunsee is nice as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. We toured Attersee Lake, Mondsee (went to St Michael’s Basilica to view the film location of Sound of Music Church where von Trapp’s were married (actual church for them was elsewhere).

We went to Bad Ischl and had a cable car at Katrin to the top of the mountain (1500 Meters) where there are two restaurants and a view that will astound. Hiking trails all around. Once on the trail, it is a quiet like one rarely experiences. Note that last ride down is 5 pm.

Bad Ischl has lovely couple of streets for shopping or cafes.

We spent a morning exploring Hallstat. Lovely historic town. Weather was glorious and tourists were manageable.

Again, thanks for the ideas.
