We will probably be spending a couple of nights in this region and wondering where to stay. We have narrowed it down to either Zell am See, Heiligenblut or Mittersill. Willing to take any input at this point. Thanks, Dan
If it is open during your trip and you are ready for something unique and middle of nowhere on the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße is the Wallackhaus. It's on my list. I have stayed in Zell am See and Heiligenblut. Zell am See visitors have changed over the years. You will find a Halal restaurant or two there now. Heiligenblut is rural, but fantasist views. You might consider staying in Fusch. Some auto manufacturers that test their cars on the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße stay in Fusch. You might see a few camouflaged cars. Just before the gate that closes the Strasse in winter is a garage with a few of the historic old blue snowplows. Mittersill is nice too. Drove through many times but never stayed.
I've been to these except Zirbenhof as it was full, but stayed a few houses over.
Great views but rooms are dated over Zell: Berggasthof Mitterberg
Middle class larger hotel in Fusch: Hotel Römerhof Fusch
Something different in Heiligenblut: Der Zirbenhof
Near Mittersill and Krimml: Gasthof Finkenhof
Other places too, but not sure I would recommend them. Depends on your budget and what you want. You pretty much have to drive to these.
We can recommend the Pension Alpenrose in Zell am See.

We LOVED our stay outside of Heiligenblut.
Consider where you might have to wait out some weather for a good day for your trip. On the first weekend of September we had to wait for the snow plows to open the road but it was truly spectacular. The day prior we spent a gray drizzly day at a Herbstfest in Taxenbach and enjoyed marching bands, goats, cows, and the tapping of the ceremonial keg.
We were very disappointed in Zell am See. It’s full of halal restaurants and kitschy shops. The actual lake is nice, but the town was a letdown and I wouldn’t recommend staying there. A bit further away, but we stay in Bad Gastein and love it. The hiking in Sportgastein is amazing, the radon train and thermal baths are unique and it’s truly a hidden gem.
