Good base outside Vienna?

We will be on a road trip in Austria in January and planning to visit Vienna for 4 days. Given that we will have a car we were considering staying somewhere outside the city, but convenient enough to go in for the day, see the sights, then retreat to outside the city in the evening.

We'd like it to obviously have hassle free parking but also be in a pleasant, pretty place of its own too. Ease of breakfast or dinner would also be ideal but not a deal breaker.

Does anyone have recommendations for a nice base of operations like this outside Vienna? Even a direction (North, South, etc of city) , or region, neighborhood, particular accommodations, etc. Would be great help.

Sorry to throw a monkey wrench into your plans , but even if you stay somewhere near the center of Vienna , the public transportation is so good , you would be better off using it , and ditching the idea of driving in . Like many other European cities , parking is difficult and traffic is stressful . Having said that, here are three choices that might fit your wishes - Baden Bei Wien , a beautiful historic spa town , about 45 minutes south of the city . North of the center is Klosterneuburg , with its beautiful Abbey and charming town center , also about 45 minutes from town . In any event , skip the car , its useless there . EDIT - I see you said January , driving in potentially inclement weather isn't very pleasant .

First of all, I myself would not do this. Still, if you want to stay outside of Vienna, yet close enough, then I would first suggest Wiener Neustadt. the second choice is St. Polten. Wiener Neustadt is much better given the two.

Park your car at a Park+Ride and stay in Vienna. Who the heck wants to visit Vienna if you have to trek 45-60 minutes to get into the city? There is no place worth that near Vienna.

Better yet, ditch the car altogether and use public transportation. I’ve lived here 15 years and never driven a car once…
