I have Celiac Disease and I will be traveling to Salzburg and Hallstat Austria in September. I’m wondering about the availability of Gluten Free options in restaurants. I would love to have a Sacher Torte. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Hi. I've been to many countries eating GF (not Austria tho). I make copies of a translated little sheet that says that I'm GF and details exactly what I need to avoid (it goes into dressings, modified corn starch, oats, etc). Yup. I had these translated into each language and I hand them out to my waiters. Can't speak to Austria but everywhere else -- Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands -- it's been super easy. A piece of (GF!) cake! :)
Normal Sacher-Torte has regular flour. It’s possible that you may find a place that does a GF version with almond flour. GF options are more normalized than ever so I bet a google search would net you some options. Otherwise, Schweinhaxen is safe. The sauce thickener might be flour but it might be cornstarch. You can ask and just get no sauce.
Here’s a site to check out https://celiactravelpack.com/gluten-free-vienna/
Schweinhaxen is safe. The sauce thickener ...
Schweinshaxen is German, in Austria it is called Stelze and properly served without a sauce.
It should look like this, the picture is from Vienna, though.
I don't recall exactly from my Austria trip but I do remember that in London every single menu had an exhaustive list of symbols and definitions about exactly what was in everything. I'm guessing Austria would be similar.
We were in Salzburg last year. I had a very good dinner at Die Weiss, where they had several GF options. They also had gluten-free beer! Though I am gluten-intolerant, not celiac, so you’d want to ask questions about ingredients and process.
There’s also a great cafe/breakfast spot called Heart of Joy Cafe.
