Getting home to Orlando from Vienna

Hi,

I’m gathering flight info for my trip next September- so excited! Our tour ends in Vienna but the flights home to Orlando take 16 hours with 2 stops. Do you know of any alternatives we could travel to and fly home quicker with only 1 (or no) stops?

Our tour starts in Munich, so I’m wondering if it would make sense to take a train to there and fly home from there? Or is there another destination that we could take a train to similarly (and maybe stay the night and explore)?

Please let me know your thoughts, thanks!

Lufthansa has a nonstop to Munich, and a one stop in Frankfurt in 13 1/2 hours for the return from Vienna. You will not find any flights returning from Vienna for much less than 13 hours.

You can check Google Flights to see what's available. Choose the "multi-city" setting to fly into Munich and out of Vienna. When I took a Rick Steves tour in September 2023 I took a short flight to IAD (from RIC) then a nonstop from Dulles (Washington DC) to Munich and another from Vienna to Dulles on United and Austrian in September of 2023. As best I can tell you can do it with one stop in 13-14 hours using United and Austrian. Watch the connection times. FRA is a huge airport with a lot of walking, but 1 1/2 hours to change planes in Munich or Washington (IAD) works unless your flight is delayed. On the outbound flights you will pass through border control when you first land in the EU. On the homeward flights you pass through border control in Dulles: get your passport stamped, pick up your checked bag, carry it past "nothing to declare" and put it on a conveyor belt (from there you'll see it in Orlando). Empty any water bottles you carried off the overseas plane because you go through security again.

Use Google flights and select the 1 stop or fewer filter. Do multi-city as well from the drop down menu. Fly into Munich and home from Vienna.

Austrian airlines flies to JFK, EWR, IAD, BOS and ORD. I am certain there are direct flights from all of these cities to Orlando...

I use flightsfrom.com to search nearby European hubs for nonstops to my home city(Orlando). Then I check connections to/from those European hubs to (in this case) Vienna to find the best connections.
