Germany + Austria + Slovenia

Hello all, starting a new thread here to get at the top of discussions. We are planning a 2 week + 2 day trip to these locations. We are a party of 6, with 2 very active 18 year olds, so we are trying to do things that they would enjoy! Also, we are renting cars from Munich airport.

What we have so far with hotels finalized based on a bunch of recommendations we got here, below is the list of each destination and top activities we have on our list for each:

NOTE: I know this seems a lot, we might not do all of these, its just a running list I am keeping

  1. Garmisch-Partenkirchen 🇩🇪 (3 nights) - Zugspitze (2,962m), Eibsee Lake, Partnach Gorge, Neuschwanstein Castle, Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge)

  2. Innsbruck 🇦🇹 (3 nights) - Nordkette Mountains - cable car ( Goetheweg hike), Stubai Glacier (Ice grotto, glacier walks), Achensee Lake (e-biket, steam cog railway), Golden Roof, Maria-Theresien-Straße, Hungerburg Funicular, Imperial Palace.

  3. Mayrhofen/Zillertal 🇦🇹 (2 nights) - Hintertux Glacier (3,250m) - Ice Palace, Gefrorene Wand Spitzen trail - glacier panorama hike, Schlegeis Reservoir, Olperer Hut trail, Ahorn Mountain Cable Car, Horbergbahn Cable Car.

  4. Grossglockner Road 🇦🇹 (Drive day) Grossglockner High Alpine Road with various viewpoints. Gamsgrubenweg - hike.

  5. Lake Bled 🇸🇮 (2 nights) Lake Bled morning loop walk, Bled Island - pletna boat, Bled castle, Ojstrica Viewpoint.

  6. Logar Valley 🇸🇮 (2 nights) Govc-Vršnik farm stay, Rinka Waterfall (optional), Logarska Dolina scenic drive, Lake Bohinj, Vogel Cable Car, Savica Waterfall.

  7. Grundlsee 🇦🇹 (2 nights) Hallstatt village - UNESCO, Market Square, Bone House, Hallstatt Salt Mine, Skywalk Hallstatt, Dachstein Ice Cave, 5 Fingers Viewing Platform, Gosausee E-bike

  8. Salzburg 🇦🇹 (2 nights) - Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg Cathedral, Mozarts birthplace, explore the town, etc.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FORUM

  • Anything to swap or skip given there are some repetition, what can I safely cut down ? anything else you think I should add instead (by skipping something else)

  • Grossglockner timing - driving July 26. Best time of day? What to prioritize at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe?

  • Logar Valley - staying Govc-Vršnik (Robanov Kot). Tips beyond Rinka Waterfall?

  • Hintertux vs Stubai - doing both. Worth €60/person for Hintertux on top of Stubai?

  • Hallstatt crowds - going early morning from Grundlsee. Is 8:30 AM early enough late July?

  • Mayrhofen base - staying Schwendau (Alpenhotel Stefanie). Any issues with this location vs central Mayrhofen?

  • Hidden gems along this route we might be missing?

  • E-bike rentals - Achensee (Sport Wörndle) and Gosausee (Intersport Gosau). Any better alternatives?

  • Any food recommendations :D

you don't need to open a new thread every time you want your post to rise to the top. All you have to do is have activity on your thread, a reply by you or others, and it will rise like cream on the milk.

Threads with activity rise, those with no activity stay put and effectively drop.

When you have 2 nights somewhere, you actually only have 1 full day in the area, so definitely prioritize what's most important to you in each area. Is this itinerary set in stone, because if not, i'd strongly consider removing one base so that you can have a few more 3 night stays.

Since you're staying at Govc-Vršnik, you should do the hike into the Robnakov Kot valley behind your lodging. It's beautiful. https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/nature-trail/kamnisko-savinjske-alpe/a-walk-through-the-robanov-kot-landscape-park/807018377/?utm_medium=qrcode&op=download

You should be doing Lake Bohinj while you're staying at Bled. They are only 20 minutes apart from each other.

Instead, while in the Logar Valley, do the Solcava Panoramic Road https://www.logarska-solcavsko.si/en/solcava-is-a-harmony-of-three-valleys/solcava-panoramic-road/
This hike along the drive is beautiful: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/hiking-trail/kamnisko-savinjske-alpe/the-path-to-the-grohot-hut/807175004/?utm_medium=qrcode&op=download

With 2 nights, likely you only have 1 full day, so I'd do the full day driving the Panorama Road with hiking and various farm stops along the way and then if you have a half day in addition, do the walk back into Robnakov. The Rinka waterfall is okay, but in general the most beautiful part of that particular area is just seeing the Logar Valley from the entrance near Hotel Plesnik. We like to eat at Penzion kmečka hiša Ojstrica with a view.

Grundlsee is one of my favorite hidden gems. If your group is at all interested in thermal spas, the thermal at nearby Bad Aussee is great - https://www.vitalresort.at/de/vital-resort?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17541840613&gbraid=0AAAAADo-ftlM-2B8NybBFna9MzroR35x6&gclid=CjwKCAjwzevPBhBaEiwAplAxvuyRFc98oLtfLzjJiMJ8q1eJQMOCMh2yIREjXxGKqjaUqnlBVANUfhoC2-gQAvD_BwE

We also love the 3 lakes tour from Grundlsee - https://schifffahrt-grundlsee.at/en/3-lakes-tour

Gosausee is also lovely.

Grossglockner is notoriously socked in with clouds, so stay flexible and only go that way if the weather allows. You have better chances in early morning, but it's no guarantee. We were in the Grossglockner area for 12 days last summer and only got to see the peak for 20 minutes spread out over a couple days the entire trip.

Personally, if it were me I’d suggest something like
Garmisch 3 nights > Innsbruck 2 nights > Mayrhofen 3 nights > Grossglockner Road OR Lake Bled along the drive > Logar Valley 3 nights > Grundlsee 3 nights > Salzburg 2 nights

Thank you, Wanderweg!

We have most of our hotel bookings done, but they're all cancelable, and we are renting a car, so the itinerary is pretty fluid, to be honest. Based on your feedback, let me see which one place we can drop.

So I went ahead and reduced 1 day from Innsbruck - 2 night stay now, added 1 day to Mayrhofen/Zillertal - 3 night stay now. We are still using Lake Bled as a pit stop for a night and added 1 day to Logar Valley - 3 nights now.

Thank you for recommendations! I am super excited about this trip! :D

That sounds great! You can stop at Bohinj on the way to the Logar Valley if you want! The mountain pass “road” route from Logar to Grundlsee is epic if you have the bravery to do it.

Will look into it for sure.. For the stay at each of these places.. this is what I have planned.

Innsbruck 🇦🇹 (2 nights) -

Day 1:

  1. Hungerburg Funicular to Nordkette Mountains - cable car ( Goetheweg hike)
  2. Explore the town - Golden Roof, Maria-Theresien-Straße, Triumphal Arch, etc

Day 2:

  1. Full day at Achensee Lake (e-biket, swim if open/possible, steam cog railway)

Mayrhofen/Zillertal 🇦🇹 (2 nights) -

Day 1

  1. Ahorn Mountain Cable Car (Edelhütte hut trail or Filzenalm Trail )
  2. Mayrhofen village exploration

Day 2 - we have a car so hoping this is logistically not too bad.

  1. Hintertux (morning)
  2. Schlegeis Reservoir (later in the day)

Day 3 - Slightly slower day given the previous day..

  1. Zell am Ziller
  2. Zillertal Valley Floor Walk

Questions:

  • Given the plan above, please let me know if you have any other suggestions.
  • Now that we have 1 extra day in Logar Valley - anything specific you recommend beyond the drive and walk you previously recommended?
  • One last thing.. we have almost 2 days in Salzburg - the last day I just want to keep it open to wander around the town.. we also love great food/wine/shopping :D .. any recommendation?

The part I don’t understand about your itinerary is that I don’t see time to move between locations + check in/out. For example, you have a full last day in Innsbruck and a full first day in Mayrhofen. Aren’t those the same day?

You are right.. the Day 1 of my Mayrhofen is when we check out from hour hotels early and head from Inssbruck to Mayrhofen. Its a 1 hour drive, I did accommodated for that time in day 1 of our stay at Mayrhofen - which is why day 1 is lighter on activities.

So I have 2 full days at Innsbruck, on the 3rd morning we leave for Mayerhofen - which is the Day 1 for Mayrhofen
