Hi, we will be in Salzburg this July for 3 days and will be going to Budapest afterwards. Do we need to pre purchase our tickets to Budapest now or can we do it when we get to Salzburg? We already booked our accommodation in Budapest. Thanks for your help.
Looking at July 12 (random date) you can buy nonrefundable Sparschiene tickets for 39 EUR now. The "walk-up" price is 93.80 EUR. Your choice if you want to save money or not.
If I already have a hotel reserved then I don't hesitate to get my train or plane ticket, especially if there's a significant price difference as noted above.
Thanks Sam. We would rather buy now for that price. Which site do we use to buy the ticket? Is this a different site than Vienna to Salzburg?
Buy them at Trainline.eu. They have the same prices as the Austrian railways (OEBB), for which they are an agent, but a much easier site to handle.

First adjust the date and time, then click on "Done" in the upper right corner. Then from Salzburg Hbf and to Budapest, and click on the one one that says tickets. You will then see a list of trains you can pick. adjust the number of passengers by clicking on that box, adding passengers and click on "Done". Then you can add options of 1st class and a seat reservation.
You may have to register your credit card with one of the 3-D security services like Visa Checkout. Or if you have an American Express card, that usually works.
Thanks a lot. We will definitely pre book the tickets.
