We are flying direct from Orlando to Frankfurt and need a way to get to Munich. We'll stay there, then go on to Salzburg. Any suggestions of an airline or a train from Frankfurt to Munich? Is there scenery worth a long train ride or should we jump on a discount airline? Our My Way Alpine Tour begins June 3rd, 2026. We arrive Frankfurt 11am June 1. Thank you!
I generally prefer to travel by train in Europe because I just think it's easier. I like sitting there and relaxing while I'm going from place to place. I don't need to go through security, and I don't need to rush to the airport. I can read a book or look at scenery.
When you count in the extra time you need to be at the airport before the flight, the aggravation of getting to the airport from the city center, and the cost involved, it's usually easier and probably does't cost much more than the cost of flying. A discount flight might be cheaper, but it really depends, and in many cases, it's not worth it (imo).
I'm curious why you didn't just fly into Munich—that would solve your problem right there.
The direct train ride between Frankfurt/M and Munich is about 3:30 hours, having the train departing right at the FRA airport.
Mucking about w security, check in, and getting to and from the airports vs a central station probably turns that 1 hr flight into 3.5ish hours so it's probably a wash. I just think train travel is much more enjoyable so given the relative similar time sucks, I'd choose the train.
I'd go with the train, too. It sounds like you might be thinking of taking that flight to Munich as soon as you arrive at FRA. Since that would be on a separate ticket, you would need to allow around 4 hours before departure, in case your incoming flight was delayed, or there were hold ups at Passport Control, Baggage claim, Check in for the second flight, and Security. Much easier to just buy a ticket for the next train at the airport train station (or on the app once you have your bags)
Thanks to all for your quick replies. We cannot get to Munich direct from Orlando, only to Frankfurt. That's why the question. We were leaning towards train travel and you all have reassured us that is the correct choice.
For future reference. Even though there isn't a direct flight on your date, you still could have booked a connecting flight on a single ticket. According to Google Flights, there are many options, with the connection in various different cities. With the single ticket, your connection time would have been much shorter, with only Passport and Security needed to be cleared. Your baggage would automatically be forwarded and if your flight was delayed and you missed your connection, the airline would be responsible for getting you on the next available flight. Just something to consider for your next trip.
