I'm going to the opera on my visit and don't want to pack a suit. Suit rentals seem difficult as the show is on a Sunday and I arrive the prior day. Would a jacket and tie be ok?

I've seen people in Uggs and sweats. A tie isnt even necessary. A nice shirt and pants are fine.

A shirt and pants is fine or if it's cool,topped with a sweater.

A lot depends on where you are sitting. If you are in the expensive seats, best to dress up a bit.
If you are in the nose-bleed seats, anything goes: frayed jeans, sweat pants and anything else in between.
