Food focused tour Vienna & any other must do experiences

We are making our first trip to Vienna the week of June 1 - 6th, 2018. We will stay 5 nights before heading to Prague to join the RS Best of Eastern Europe tour. We've always tried to work in a cooking class or food/wine experience in our previous travels. Has anyone done something food or wine focused (cooking class, tour etc) in Vienna and, if so, would you recommend it for other travellers?

We are also interested in hearing from anyone who wants to share a must do/can't be missed experience.

Our previous travels have been greatly enriched by the information and feedback we've received on the RS Forum.

Thank you from Canada
JoAnn

We did a food tour in Vienna in September, and my husband and I ended up being the only ones on it. It was labeled as a Food, Coffee and Market tour with Vienna Urban Adventures. Don't expect much coffee; we did start at Demel's in the morning so did get coffee, but that was it. We did walk a lot, which was good for us, and Wolfie walked us by many restaurants and shared information about them, although we did not stop. Then we went to the big market and tasted quite delicious things at several spots. Then he took us to a few neighborhoods not on the regular "tourist" route. We enjoyed the tour and the information we received, but it was clear that this tour was still being refined. It did not compare to one we did in Berlin a few years ago.

If you can, I recommend a food tour in Prague; we took one that was fantastic! It was not cheap, but well worth the money. It was with Taste of Prague and I believe was the "Foodie" tour. We learned a lot about current food trends in Prague; experienced some unique restaurants; had wonderful food and alcoholic beverages. We took the tour before our RS Best of Eastern Europe tour began, but if you are not getting there early, I think you could do it the second night of the tour.

Dear padams thank you for all the information you provided. We have been spoiled by exceptional food tours and experiences on past trips. I will look into the one in Prague. Did you enjoy the RS Best of Eastern Europe tour? Any suggestions, red flags or concerns? Thanks again, JoAnn

we took the RS Munich Salzburgh Vienna Tour last Oct. Third Man Museum has so many interesting artifacts about the effects of WWII. Gerrard and his wife run it, call ahead, its not open all the time. Incredible 1st hand accounts of soldiers and people, truly compelling story of how the US saved Vienna culture. Albertina museum if if in to art was awesome. Dremmel cafe, eat the chocolate cake! I loved that city!
Have fun.

JoAnn -- the RS Best of Eastern Europe is a very good tour. Our guide, Sanel, had so much information and background on all the countries, cultures, recent conflicts etc. He is from Bosnia and shared some of his personal experiences. While we like to travel on our own, we were glad to be on this tour as our knowledge of these countries and their history was much more limited than other places we have visited. We had a lot of rain so that changed our plans in Rovinj (no lounging by the pool when it is cold and wet). Favorites -- Krakow, particularly Market Square; Plitvice National Park is amazing; fell in love with Lake Bled. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any decent food tours or cooking classes in Vienna. There is a real gap here for that sort of thing.

I can suggest visiting markets on Saturday mornings, particularly Karmelitermarkt, for a nice food experience. A DIY tour of cafes would also be worth the time, but skip the touristy Sacher and Demel. Head to Sperl, Diglas, Gerstner and Vollpension instead. A visit to a heuriger is also a good idea - I really like Stammersdorf. Here's a good English article - http://www.viennawurstelstand.com/article/stammersdorfer-kellergasse-a-guide-to-heurigen-hopping/. This website also has a lot of good food recommendations.

There is a considerable number of food tours available, but if you live in Vienna you take no notice. No local would take such a tour given his own knowledge about places where you can get excellent and reasonably priced food.
