flying out of Munic

We have most of our Austria trip worked out but we still have one missing link. We will take the train from Salzburg the day before we fly out of Munich. We have a very early flight. What is the best way to get from the train station to the airport? Where is a good place to stay near or at the airport that will make it easy to get a very early flight?
As usual, thanks for your help.

Hi,

We really liked the old town of Erding as a "last night" in Germany. We stayed at the Best Western Park Hotel. Train is 2 blocks away, the charming old town is a 5 min. walk and the airport is 20 min. away by car or taxi. The hotel ordered a taxi for us to the airport (left the hotel approx. 5am) the night before we left. Cost was 20 Euro for both of us and luggage, may be a bit more now. The hotel even had an early breakfast out for just us at 4am.

There is a Lufthansa bus that departs from the front of the train station (Arnulfstr.)
The Kempinski Airport hotel is directly connected to the airport, but it's expensive. There are lots of hotels near the airport with shuttle service. I'd suggest lookng at Booking.com under Munich, airport hotels.

The Freising neighbourhood is close to the airport. A number of people have recommended specific hotels there in old threads here - try using Google to do a site search for Freising on community.ricksteves.com

There is a Courtyard by Marriott in Friesling by the airport, and they have transportation to the terminal. I checked online, and the Senior Rate is 84 Euros--pretty reasonable by any standards.

If you're ever wanting to see what hotels are close to an airport, sign into GoogleMaps.com and filter it by the airport name. Click on "+" 3-4 times and you'll see icons pop up for hotels. If you click on the icons, you can be linked into the hotel's website for pictures and rates. I've found GoogleMaps to be very useful when looking for rooms in specific locations.

Buy a Bayern-Ticket for 27€ (two people) from a ticket automat in Salzburg or pay 2€ more from a ticket counter. That will cover you by any regional train from Salzburg to Munich Ostbahnhof. From there take the S-8 to the airport.

I would stay in Freising. There is a bus in the morning from the Freising Bahnhof every 20 min. It takes about 20 minutes and costs 2,60€/person. Look for hotels on the Freising website. The hotel page is here. Click on the "here" link where is says "for english version ...".

I've always stayed at Kleines Gästehaus (45€ single, 69€ double), but knowledge of German might be needed. In past years, people on this website recommended Zur Gred.

If you want to stay in Freising, take the train all the way to the Hauptbahnhof and take the S1 S-Bahn to Freising Bhf. Sit in the front half of the train. It splits in Neufahrn and the back part goes to the airport. Look for signs on the cars.
