Flights out of Vienna

Trying to find a flight from Vienna back to California after tour ends. Any suggestions on airlines? Would it be easier to get to Salzburg and fly out of there? Also, when should I book to get best prices for a June tour starting in Cologne and ending in Vienna?

Austrian airlines has direct flights from Vienna to Los Angeles.

Salzburg is a smaller city and has a much smaller airport.

The only flight, ever, that I didn’t want to get off from was an Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Washington, DC. Food, service, legroom and inflight entertainment in economy were all great. Now, this was 10 years ago, so who knows now. BTW, I remember the Vienna airport security being particularly arduous. Might want to check on that, too.

Vienna is a large international airport with direct flights on Austrian Airlines to several cities in the IS, including Los Angeles.

Salzburg is a regional airport with only flights to other cities in Europe and zero flights to the US, so that is a no.

The security in the Vienna Airport is highly efficient and takes about 5 minutes, so that is absolutely not a thing to worry about.

I'm doing the GAS tour in June as well, flying from Chicago on United. I'm flying nonstop to Frankfurt and will take the train to Cologne. There are no nonstop options to Cologne. I'm flying home nonstop from Vienna on Austrian Airlines. I already purchased the flights, although they were insanely expensive this year. I had been watching flights for a few different RS tours; flights are significantly higher for next June than in the past (at least from Chicago).

I hope Julie had a chance to see the responses on her other thread ( asking about a travel agent in Seattle before it disappeared. There were several responses mentioning multi-city flights from SFO, into Frankfurt and out of Vienna. The Condor flight were very reasonably-priced.

But she could also try a multi-city booking with Austrian Airlines, mentioned above, to compare.

Edit: I just checked Austrian Airlines, for the same dates I used to check Condor and Lufthansa. Austrian came up with the exact same price as Lufthansa ( so maybe a codeshare situation),:which was about $600 more than the Condor price for the same multi-city itinerary.

I’ve been noticing this too, but I expect prices to decrease in the next month or two for next June. At least that’s what I’m hoping. 😊

I have my eye on a Swiss Air flight to and from Chicago and Zurich. Currently, prices are double what I paid in June 2022. But I’ve been checking the fare calendar and prices are decreasing. May and June prices are currently super high. I hope in the next month or two they will be more in line with the prior months.

So, if you don’t see decent prices now for next June. Wait. You still have plenty of time for them to come down.

Austrian Airlines has seasonal nonstop service between Vienna and LAX (so only part of the year, check google flights). They are owned by Lufthansa.

And Lufthansa itself for some reason has nonstops between LA and Munich, also Frankfurt I believe. So if you're in Vienna, you could do Salzburg and then train to Munich airport and do a nonstop.

I believe the OP said they hope to fly out from the Bay Area, not LA, on their other thread (now gone).

After reading the other thread, I found direct flights from SFO to Frankfurt, which is where they want to start, and one-stop flights back from Vienna, where they end their tour, on 3 airlines: Condor, Lufthansa, and Austrian Air. The latter two may have been the same flights as codeshares as they were priced the same. For the dates I looked at in June ( when their tour takes place), the Condor multi city trip was as low as $1319 for Economy Flex ( different dates had higher prices). Lufthansa and Austrian Air said $1892 for the same dates and itinerary, also in Economy Flex. Economy Basic would be around $200 less on any of the three bookings.

I don’t know about Lufthansa or Austrian Air, but in our experience ( twice flying Condor), their prices start low and go up from there.
