First Time Visit - 10 days/ 10 nights trip at the end of November

Hello:

My wife and I are planning our first trip to Austria at the end of November. We have 10 days and 10 nights of effective vacation time there. I am in my early 40s and we are planning to use the train for most of our travel in the country. We know we want to visit Vienna, Salzburg, and Hallstatt. We want to visit Innsbruck but we heard most are closed so we aren't sure if we should. We also think it will be more efficient if we fly back (or start) from either Munich or perhaps Zurich.

Hope you can share your thoughts about the following:
- Should we include Innsbruck? We simply want to see the alps. Do you recommend an alternative in the Germany side perhaps?
- Do you think we should fly back from Munich/ Zurich?
- How many days should we allocate in each location?

Many thanks in advance for your insight.

Best,
Dion

At the end of November, Christmas markets will be in full swing, so make sure to make time for those. I also think you might have left out a work when referring to Innsbruck as you say "most are closed" but I'm not sure what "most" is referring to?

I would suggest arriving in Vienna and departing from Munich or the reverse. I think that 4 days in Vienna, 4 days in Salzburg (including day trips to Hallstatt and Wolfgangsee) and 2 days in Innsbruck should work. You only will need the train/public transportation for this trip.

You're going in a transition time of the year--before the ski season is in full swing. It's a shame you don't have just a little more town, as Munich and Vienna are both great large cities and worthy of 4 days minimum apiece.

You would do best to fly into Munich and spend 3 days. Then take a 2 hour train down to Innsbruck for a couple of days. You can take a train from Innsbruck to Salzburg and another train Salzburg-Vienna. Hallstatt is off the beaten path a little, and you might want to save it for your next trip.

A open jaw flight out of Vienna would be preferable. Or, you can do the itinerary in reverse.

Another alternative would be to visit Munich and then rent a car and make a circle to the south, going thru Innsbruck, up to Salzburg and returning to Munich--skipping Vienna. 10 days is not quite enough time to take in the two large cities as they both have so much to see.

I went to college in Innsbruck some 52 years ago, and we get back to that incredibly beautiful city from time to time.

Maybe I missed something? What are closed? "We want to visit Innsbruck but we heard most are closed so we aren't sure if we should."

Many thanks for your insights.

A few places like Ambras Castle, Nordkette were told to be closed in November. I thought others will be similar but apparently not the case.

Nordkette is apparently back for service on November 25 so I can still visit. Thanks for pointing this out.

Should we be concerned with the weather at the end of November?

We have read conflicting articles about it.

Sorry I didn't clarify further.

We know its going to be cold and we don't mind it but will it rain most of the time?

Most of the time, definitely not. Sometimes, likely.

The forecast for the rest of November predicts temperatures somewhat above the long-term average.
