First time traveler - getting from Munich airport to Salzburg Old town center

Greetings all - family of 6 flying into Munich in November. Staying in old town center area of Salzburg. Would appreciate details on going from Munich airport to train station to Salzburg presumably to taxi to old town. Thanks in advance, certainly do not want to be confused after such a long flight!

If you haven’t already download the Deutsches Bahn app for easy access to train schedules all over Europe. If traveling in Germany the app will give you estimated prices based on type of train, etc.

Looks like you can take the S-Bahn from Munich airport to Munich OST and transfer to a EC or something like that. Buy your tickets before boarding any train (S is a different type train from Eurocity). Trains are about every 30 minutes and the journey to Salzburg a little over 2 hours.

With a family of 6 I suggest a taxi to the center especially if you haven’t been to Salzburg. If you’re going late November the Christmas market will be open, so even more reason to taxi.

A family of 6 will need to split up into two taxis. There’s no way all of you plus luggage will fit into one taxi, even a minivan. We are a family of 4, and sometimes it is a game of Tetris getting luggage into minivan taxis - they are smaller than minivans in the US.

I suggest writing the name and address of your hotel on cards to hand to your taxi drivers. Be aware that areas of the old town are pedestrian-only, so you may get dropped of a ways from your hotel and need to walk to the hotel. Make sure that someone in each taxi is familiar enough with the area to direct you to the hotel.

Hi,

I have taken the train from Munich to Salzburg but have not traveled from the Munich airport to Salzburg so take this advice with a grain of salt and do your own fact checking. The website rome2rio suggests taking a train from the Munich airport to the Munich Hauptbahnhof (train station) and then transferring to a train from there to Salzburg. That sounds like the easiest option. However, I am also reading the following info concerning the rail lines from the airport -

Construction work on S-Bahn and regional trains
Extensive construction work will be taking place on S-Bahn and regional trains in the upcoming months. This will also result in partial delays and train cancellations on the S1, S8, RE22 and RB33 airport lines. Please check before your trip to/from Munich Airport whether your connection is affected.

There is also an express bus service from the Munich airport to the Munich train station where you can catch on ongoing train to Salzburg. The express bus would certainly be less expensive than a taxi or two at 80 to 100 euros per taxi. It looks like the bus is $4 to $11 per person.

If you check the Munich airport website, there should be info for getting from there to Munich.

From the Salzburg train station, there are buses into town. Per rome2rio, bus #840 will get you into town for a euro per person. We actually walked from the train station in to the historic center of town as it isn’t that far. It took us less than half an hour. That being said, I don’t know the ages or physical capabilities of the people in your party or where you are staying in Salzburg.

I would suggest that everyone pack light in any case. I hope this helps.

You will travel from the Munich Airport to Munich Ostbahnhof or Munich Hauptbahnhof to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. Hauptbahnhof means Main Train Station.

You will want to travel on regional trains, which will take about 2.5 hours - not much longer at all than a faster train.

When you travel on a regional train, you should buy a Bayern Ticket, which costs 26 Euro and then an additional 8 Euro per person with children under 15 free. You can buy the Bayern Ticket through the app or at the station. You can use the ticket on any regional train within Bavaria and to Salzburg.

If you download the Deutsche Bahn app, then you can see all the schedules and information you need.

It is pretty easy to take a bus from the Salzburg train station into the city center. If you take a taxi, you will likely need two of them.

Super easy to get there on the train. The station, however, seemed like a mile walk to the old center and not a scenic walk. You may want to get a taxi(s), depending on how much you feel comfortable walking.
