Hello. I am visiting Austria (solo trip) in late spring and will plan a day visit to a Eisenstadt. In addition to visiting the Esterhazy Palace, etc. I’d like to visit a winery if possible. Does anyone recommend Weingut Esterházy, or does anyone have another favorite in the area? I will be using public transportation, plus taxi service if necessary. Thanks!
Weingut Esterházy, located in Trausdorf an der Wulka, is well known and worth a visit, but I do not know about visting hours and/or tours.
Both Eisenstadt and Trausdorf are reachable by public busses departing from Wien Hbf (Vienna's main train station).
I live in Eisenstadt. There are numerous local, family-run favorites (look for a 'Schenkhaus': food and the wine is by the family running it), whose opening hours will be determined by their seasonal schedules.
A few other thoughts--I'd say it depends on what you are looking for in your visit:
-The Selektion Vinothek across from the Esterházy Palace has all major wines in Burgenland for wine tasting/buying + light bites
-Living here, I've never been to the Esterházy Weingut in Trausdorf (about a ten minute drive from Eisenstadt) but it's probably worth visiting. I think their market is mostly out-of-town visitors.
-I like the Domaine Pöttelsdorf (about a 15 minute drive) for tasting/buying wine (no food)
-Buses or trains from Vienna are easy, as are local taxis within/near Eisenstadt.
-If you go to a Schenkhaus, don't plan to just pop in for an hour...these are places to enjoy, slow down, converse, etc.
-The city of Rust is also lovely (yes, with wine too) if this is your only trip to Burgenland.
-Oh, and on Sundays, nearly everything's closed--you've been warned, haha!
Let me know if I can help you as your travel dates near :)
Thank you for the suggestions! I look forward to exploring my options.
