Ehrenberg Castle Ensemble- Is it worth a trip from Fussen?

We are looking to see some castles and have 2 full days to work with while staying in Fussen. We plan Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles on the first day. We were considering Linderhoff the second day, but are looking to see some older castles. Would you recommend the Ehrenberg Castle Ensemble? I hear that they are ruins, so are they worth seeing? What type of transportation is best to take from Fussen to Ruette and then the Ehrenberg Castle Ensemble? Are there any other castles in the Fussen area that would be better worth seeing? Any good tours that we can join that start in Fussen to see these castles? We do not have a car reserved at this point and are arriving in late Sept. Thanks.

There are periodic buses from Füssen to Reutte. You can find them on the German Rail website. When I looked into it some years ago, I also found buses from Reutte to the base the mountain, but it's still a hike from there. I concluded that my interest did not justify the difficulty getting to them.

On a mountain overlooking Pfronten is Falkenstein, site of Ludwig's next (last) castle. It's easier to get to the base, but still a hike up.

There are also two lower castle ruins (see also Eisenberg) between Füssen and Pfronten, but I'm not sure how to get to them. (It's a 3.3 km walk from the Steinrumpelkreuzung bus stop a few minutes out of Pfronten, Weissbach.)

We visited the Ehrenberg ruins one evening when we were staying in Reutte. We enjoyed our visit but I think you can do better considering that they aren't in your direct line of travel. I'm sorry I can't suggest an alternative in the Fussen area but if you are traveling to other parts of Germany there are lots of other options.

What's there is pretty basic per my experience and I wouldn't recommend you make the visit, especially if via public transit.
