Easter 2018

We expect to be is Hallstatt Good Friday and Salzburg Easter weekend. It appears that sights, and churches for Mass, are open, but what should we expect regarding shops, transportation, restaurants?

Good Friday is NOT a public holiday in Austria (other than in Germany), but Monday after Easter is, so shops are usually closed then. Hallstatt, being a touristic hotspot, may have been granted an exception. There is no school during the Easter week; this may have an influence on bus schedules, because children go to school by public transport. There are no school busses in Austria.

Check public transport time tables; most likely there are different schedules for workdays (with school), workdays (without school), weekends, and holidays.

Restaurants show their opening times at the entrance and most likely on their homepage.

Shops will be closed on Easter Monday. Shops are always closed on Sundays.

This is the general rule, but if a community has been declared as "touristic area" shops may open on Sundays. About half of the communities in the state Salzburg belong to this category. I'm pretty sure that this applies to Hallstatt as well, being in a different state though.

The City of Salzburg is too big to be declared touristic as a whole; hence the Sunday opening is restricted to the historic center ("Altstadt").

So you'll be fine getting your Mozart balls and Sound of Music magnets at the tourist shops.
