Early May in Tyrol, Driving, and Closures

Was wondering if anyone has any experience driving in Tyrol in early May. I plan on driving from Alpbachtal to Merano/Val Gardena the first week of May but learned that some roads are still closed in the South Tyrol during that time.

I understand that there will still be snow at elevation during this time of the year but was concerned about the actual driving conditions.

Also, with early May being shoulder season could anyone let me know what sights are definitely closed? For example, doing research I’ve learned that the Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden (which I had planned to see) is closed until mid-May.

Merano is fairly low in elevation and May is relatively late. If you drive the Brenner highway you won't find any snow, but the Timmelsjoch road is likely to be closed to the end of May. Also the Reschenpass, while lower, may be closed. It is not unknown to have snow on higher passes even in the first half of June.

We drove the area in April a few years back. Our experiences were we had no problems. We drove the Jaufen Pass to Merano and the Val Venosta. A few days later around Bolzano and to the Val Gardena. Then to Innsbruck.

I did a similar road trip last year, starting from Zurich. There were quite a few closures, either due to weather or construction. In fact, almost 1/3 of the A12 was under construction (thus tons of congestion). A supposedly 3-hour trip took almost 6 hours, even without road accidents (that we knew of at the time). We saw some truck drivers get off their vehicles to take cigarette breaks.

So, I would suggest that you keep your itinerary flexible. Weather is Tyrol is fickle: don't book non-refundable hotels. It may be more expensive this way, but it's worth it because you can avoid undesirable weather.

I recall that some sights were closed, such as certain gorges with trails. Some cable cars were closed for mechanical maintenance.
