Durnstein or Krems?

I've read many posts about the trip to Melk - Krems. Almost everyone recommends getting off at Durnstein and hiking up to the ruined castle. We're not interested in any climbing - is there any other reason to prefer Durnstein to Krems? From what I read, they both have an old center etc....
Thanks.

Durnstein is a small village. Krems is a large town. Durnstein has beautiful river views. The center of Krems is far from the river. Durnstein has history and lots of wine and apricot product shops. Krems has everything a normal Austrian town would have.

I actually prefer wandering through Weissenkirchen or Spitz over Durnstein, better restaurants and wineries. If you go to Durnstein, have an apricot dumpling on the terrace of the Richard Lionheart hotel.
