Driving Vienna - Salzburg

In late May I will be driving from Vienna to Salzburg. Actually we will be driving to St. Johann-im-Pongau, where we will spend one week. I'm looking for anywhere interesting to stop along the way. According to Via Michelin the shortest route takes 4 hr 8 minutes. That would give us some time to make a stop or two. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The direct Autobahn route goes right by Melk Abbey, so there's a recommendation for starters. You can see it from the road.

I would stop in Melk and Krems,I spent several nights in Melk, the Abbey is a must see.Krems is a very nice town to walk and they have a nice abbey up on a hill.

The obvious stop is Melk, but I would say Duernstein or Weissenkirchen would make a better picnic spot.

A deeper dive would include Steyr, Enns or Gmunden. Gmunden along the lakefront is a particularly beautiful spot.
