Driving from Oberammergau to Salzburg, what to stop for along the way?

Assuming there isn't some last thing to see or do, we will drive to Salzburg on Tues morning, Sept 27. (We will return the rental car at Freilassing, Germany on Tues or Wed). Some things I've thought of seeing during our 4-4 1/2 days in Salzburg (we leave Sunday AM by train): Berchtesgaden, Konnigsee, a salt mine, Werfen, Eagles Nest. It dawned on me that we could drive the southern route and do one or two of these things on the way. Any suggestions on how to make it work smoothly?

Other information to consider:
We have no actual schedule in Salzburg, just lots of things on the wish list: Hohensalzburg, Hellbrun, Mirabell, Mozart spots, a bicycle tour? vs walking tour on our own, old town, walk along the ridge above town.

We will probably get the Salzburg Card.

On Saturday, I'd like to get out of town again, go somewhere restful and pretty.

Obviously, if we have to return the rental car by 3PM on Tues, that would limit what we could do, which is why I'm considering extending car rental by one day (though our apartment doesn't have parking).

Thanks!

I remember doing the drive once, doing an itinerary through Bavaria and joining the motorway around Rosenheim. Exceptionally beautiful and serene country landscape, but it took somewhat longer than anticipated.
No one of the places you quote are along that route - Berchtesgaden and its area are easily visited from Salzburg.
The only big stop could be the castle at Herrenchiemsee, but it would be not an easy occasional stop as you have to take a ferry twice to visit the castle.

You could drive to Innsbruck (1 hour 15 minutes from Oberammergau), have a three or four hours stop there and then drive to Salzburg (2 hours 30 minutes). - In this case be sure to have the Austrian highway vignette.

Herrenchiemsee is very worthwhile, yet takes a few hours only because of the ferry to and from the island and the walk to and from the palace.

For a restful day out of Salzburg, I’d suggest driving to St. Gilgen, look around and then board the Wolfgangsee lake ship. Visit Strobl and or St. Wolfgang. Time on the water is VERY relaxing and VERY scenic.
