Drive from Salzburg to Hallstatt and from Hallstatt to Vienna

Hi,

I am planning a Central Europe trip which will include one day where I will drive from Salzburg to Hallstatt and and then the next day where I will drive from Hallstatt to Vienna.

I would like to ask what stops you recommend when driving from Salzburg to Hallstatt (considering that I will want to get to Hallstatt on the same day and do not want to stay overnight somewhere else?

After having researched a bit, I would like to stop and see Wolfgangsee Lake and Bad Ischl.

WIll that be enough for a day or is it possible to stop and see more places?

If it is possible to stop and see more places then which places do you recommend?

Similarly, I would like to ask what stops you recommend when driving from Hallstatt to Vienna (considering that I will want to get to Vienna on the same day and do not want to stay overnight somewhere else?

After having researched a bit, I plan to drive along the Traunsee and stop at Kloster Melk and some of this involves taking the Autobahn A1.

WIll that be enough for a day or is it possible to stop and see more places?

If it is possible to stop and see more places then which places do you recommend?

Thanks

Hi saad.latif1992-

I am excited for your upcoming trip. The drive between Salzburg and Hallstatt is beautiful. We did it this past summer. While a stop in Bad Ischl is totally possible by taking the more scenic route between Salzburg and Hallstatt I would suggest thinking about what you want to accomplish in Hallstatt. It gets VERY busy in the afternoon. We left Salzburg very early and managed to get to Hallstatt before all the tour buses. It was a great experience. The salt mine was fabulous and we did Rick's self guided walk found in his tour book. We left by about 2pm. On the way back to Salzburg we hit Bad Ischl and Wolfgangsee Lake so presumably you could stop by on the way to Hallstatt. We didn't do the boat ride or anything on the Woldgangsee due to rain but I think after a ton of research before we left that you could spend a significant amount of time in that area. I have decided next time we head back that we will spend a few days touring around Salzkammergut. That being said a stop on the way to Hallstatt is totally doable and perhaps you could explore Hallstatt late afternoon upon arrival and maybe do the salt mine in the morning before heading off to Vienna. Enjoy your trip. It is a magical place.

Melk is a good stop. Also consider a stop in Steyr.

Gosausee rather than Hallstatt. Then the Lake district, Wilhering (skip Linz) , Mauthausen, St Florian, Maria Taferl, Melk, Krems.
