I will be attending an indoor evening concert at the Salzberg Festival in August. At home in the US I would dress very nicely for such a concert but am wondering if a more casual dress would be acceptable while on vacation as I hate to carry clothing that I would only wear once.
Surprisingly, summer classical opera and concert festivals can be more formal than regular season. Salzburg Festival is one of those.
The main hall (Grosses Festspielhaus) is incredibly hot in August; Austrian concert halls seem to have minimal AC systems. Thus said, most of the public dresses in their best, with local ladies wearing the most elegant dirndl dresses (possibly the most elegant dresses you will ever see live on non modelling people).
Buy a dirndl and you can wear it to Oktoberfest too. ; )
But they are bulky to pack and hot to wear.
Maybe a simple black knit dress that packs small, with a nice scarf or necklace?
We have the same dilemma - two evening festival concerts in August as part of a 3-week, multi-activity trip. When I googled pictures of the festival , most people were wearing formal evening attire. What would work for a man? Would black slacks and a black dress shirt be appropriate? Would a short but dressy dress be ok for a woman? Thanks.
Salzburg - literal translation: salty castle. Salzberg - literal translation: salty hill. Correct name is Salzburg.
thank you for the correction on my spelling.
Okay, so I will take a black lace dress I have that I often wear to concerts here at home in the U.S. Can you tell me if bare legs (no nylon stockings) is acceptable?
You'll be fine. Besides, you can always wear it to a nice dinner so then it will be more than once.
No one wears nylons in the summer here. Ever.
