Dolomites / Lienz - late train or extra night...

Hi, I have another question about Lienz...

We are staying in the Dolomites two nights for sure. I'm wondering whether we stay a third.

Currently, I have the following itinerary:

DAY 5

  • Wake up in Verona
  • Train to Bolzano (9:04am; 1hr 27 min)
  • Bus to Alpe di Siusi
  • Hike

DAY 6

  • Wake up in Alpe di Siusi
  • Morning Hike
  • Bus to Bolzano
  • Lunch around Laubengasse or Via dei Portici
  • BZ ‘18-’45
  • South Tyrol Museum of Archeology
  • Train to Lienz (6:01pm; 3 hr 8 min)

DAY 7

  • Wake up in Lienz; Rent Car
  • Agntum Ruins
  • Drive to Heiligenblut (40 min from Lienz)

The alternate would be to go back to Alpe di Siusi after the museums in Bolzano on Day 6, stay overnight (3rd night) and leave in the am for either Brixon or Fortezza (bus or taxi) to catch the train to Lienz. We would then get the rental car, see Agntum Ruins and drive on to Heiligenblut, not staying overnight in Lienz.

(BTW, I have another post about a water park in Lienz)

Please let me know if your experience tells you that we should stay an extra night in Alpe di Suisi and burn daylight on the train to Lienz or take a 6pm train (not getting into Lienz until 9pm).

Thank you!

Melissa

Have you checked out lodgings? You may find that your hikes do not begin particularly near your lodgings. As I recall, to get from Castelrotto (just as an example) to the Alpe di Siusi, one has to take a bus then a lift. This is by way of saying that I suspect you may be glad to have a 3rd night in the Dolomites.

I do like your idea of hitting the museum in Bolzano on your way out of the area. I'd try not to keep it on Day 6 if I were staying another night up in the mountains.

If you want to hike the Alpe di Siusi you should be staying in Ortisei, especially if you plan to hike there more than one day - unless you plan to stay in a rifugio. Backtracking all the way back down to Bolzano via public transport will eat up quite a bit of time. You should see everything you want to see in Bolzano on your way up into the mountains from Verona, stay near the Alpe di Siusi for as long as you want to hike there, and then continue on to Lienz.
Public transport by bus in the Dolomites is quite good - but be careful if you plan to use it on the weekends. Service is more limited on Saturday and even more limited on Sunday.

Thanks acraven and Anita!

I agree with you about not wanting to backtrack to Bolzano, however I have a logistics issue for the museums in Bolzano. I really must see the ice man and the museum is not open on Monday, which is Day 5, so I have to wait to see it either on Day 6 or Day 7.

And I'm dealing with limitations before Day 5 too, as we'll be in Venice and then Verona and I hate to cut a day out of Venice (we'll be there for only 2 1/2 days). We're only in Verona for one full day and one night, so I can't cut that down. hhhmmm. Back to the drawing board. Maybe I can ADD a day to Verona or Venice and pluck one from somewhere afterwards.

This travel planning is truly a puzzle!
