My husband and I (early 40s) will be in Germany and Austria next June, and I am not sure whether to spend three full days in the Salzkammergut region and three in Filzmoos or do all six days in Salzkammergut and make day trips to the Filzmoos area. I want to do a couple of specific day hikes in/around Filzmoos, but I am not sure if it's worth it to stay there or make day trips. Earlier on the trip, we will spend a couple days in Munich and a few in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We'll have a rental car for this portion of the trip.
These areas are quite different as the Salzkammergut is focused on the lakes whereas Filzmoos looks at the mountains.
Where are you staying in Salzkammergut?
I would consider staying in Schladming instead of Filzmoos.
Oh, interesting, I had not come across Schadming yet. Why do you suggest it over Filzmoos?
I havenโt booked accommodation in Salzkammergut yet but am considering St. Gilgen or perhaps the outskirts of Salzburg.
