My husband, 7y/o son and I would like to take a night train from Vienna to Venice. Is there a direct one? What "type" of tickets should we buy so we can sleep in? What's a good website to buy these tickets from? We are in the US right now and I assume we should reserve these tickets ahead of time.

Austrian Rail/OEBB has tickets in a private double sleeper at an advance-discount of 99 per person; full fare is only a bit more. Looks like you can book that online as an e-ticket, but be sure to read the details of the delivery before completing purchase; I did not confirm. If you would be happy with a shared couchette, then you could probably book just a few days ahead in Europe.
