Dining in Vienna

I will be traveling with a group of 7 to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest in September, and I would appreciate recommendations for restaurants for dinner. I would prefer reasonably-priced restaurants, but we will splurge for one dinner. Thanks.

You must visit a heuriger when in Vienna. Schuebel-Auer or Feuerwehr Wagner are good choices.

Plachutta on Wollzeile for iconic Tafelspitz. Delish!

Figlmueller for schnitzel - touristy, but for good reason.

Palmenhaus - beautiful setting, great food.

Amerlingbeisl in the not-to-be-missed quaint Spittelberg neighborhood.

This link from one of my favorite websites gives a few more outdoor ideas as the weather will be pleasant.

Oh, and don't forget to have cake and coffee at Demel, Hawelka and Sperl...and a kasekrainer at the Wurstelstand at Hoher Markt.

Mahlzeit!

Agreed on hitting a heuriger (or two!). We followed Rick's advice - went to a neighborhood with a couple in close proximity, and picked the one that looked liveliest that night. Live music, flowing wide, and delicious food, you can't go wrong. We wound up going to two different ones, and they were among our favorite experiences from that vacation.

Bar Trzesniewski (very close to St. Stephen's Cathedral) is a neat place - they sell tiny little sandwiches for cheap - you need probably 6 or so for a light lunch. It's fun, and a throwback.

We had a nice meal at La Norma, an Italian place that is a few blocks behind the Cathedral. It was not fancy or expensive, but the food was good.

Getting sachertorte at the Hotel Sacher is super touristy, but kind of fun. It was a little sweet for me, but my wife enjoyed it.

I highly recommend Cafe Central - Trotsky and Stalin used to play chess there, Freud had a table, and many other notables used to be regulars. It's a beautiful restaurant and has very good food. They are known for their desserts!

If you want to splurge one night in Vienna; I went to the restaurant in the Imperial Hotel a few years ago and it turned into one of the most incredible meals of a life time. Ended up getting a tour of the kitchen and thanking the staff. Maybe the stars were just right that night.
