December daytrip to Kitzbuhel?

Wondering if someone can offer advice on the thought of making a daytrip from Munich or Salzburg to Kitzbuhel, is it doable, practical? using public transportation. Not a skiing trip but would love to see the famous ski run and explore the town a bit before heading back.

I think making it a day trip is a bit of stretch, but I'm no train expert. Keep in mind the shortness of days in December too. It will be dark around 16:30. I would overnight, but Christmas and New Years are high season. Maybe something last minute? Should look great decorated for the holidays.

Is it doable? Yes, it is, but it would be a long day spending about 5 hours in trains.

Trains from Munich to Kitzbühel and from Salzburg to Kitzbühel take between 2 and 2:30 hours.
Trains from Salzburg are more frequent, thus it would be easier to start from Salzburg.
I would do it only, if the weather forecast is good and I would recommend to do a round-trip. Take the (longer) but more scenic route via Bischofshofen, Zell am See and St. Johann to Kitzbühl and the faster route via Wörgl and Kufstein on the way back.
Start as early as possible and enjoy the view on the way to Kitzbühel.
