Day Trips out of Vienna

Hello,

We're 60ish Canadians travelling with a car from Munich [edited] to Prague and then to Vienna in May 2015. We're staying 6 nights in Vienna, bookended by the Lipennzaner Stallions at the beginning and the Boys Choir at the end. We'll want to do the usual tourist things in Vienna during our stay but thought it would be nice to plan for a few days trips out of the city. Thinking of the Wachau area and wondering what other day trips are suggested? Also any secret spots in Vienna that people would recommend? Appreciate your help.

Hallstatt is a beautiful town on a lake about a 3 hour drive from Vienna - Not sure if that's too far for a day trip but could be worth considering :) I'll be going there in May myself.

Definitely do a day trip to the Wachau. You can get a train from Vienna to the towns of either Melk or Krems an der Donau, which are at either end of the most scenic section. There is an hourly bus service between the two along the river bank, and you can buy a day pass for ten euros (last year's price) that lets you get on or off the bus as you please.

If you want to see where the Lippizaners are bred, take a drive down to Piber in Styria. Perhaps spend the night in Graz. Also, besides the Wachau, a day trip to Eisenstadt near Hungary can be combined with some wine tasting.

Hi,

How far do you want to go for this day trip from Vienna? For something close by and more Habsburg history, you can go to Baden bei Wien. The public transportation from Karlsplatz goes to Baden bei Wien, no need for the train.

Only if one thinks that six days in Vienna is monotonous. But I'll go for that day trip to Budapest, not one night.

Budapest is so pretty in the evening. Leave Vienna about 8 am, be in BPest before lunch. spend the night in Bpest, then catch an early morning train back to Vienna and be there by 11am.

Excellent ideas - thank you so much. Planning for 2 months all around Europe so getting specific ideas in each place is challenging to do - you really helped us a lot.

Appreciated,
