Day Trips from Vienna

I'm planning to stay in Vienna for 5 days. I was wondering if spending one day each going to Hallstatt and Prague is possible by train/bus? For a day trip?

Since both are about 4 hours away, one way, it would be a very long day. You might consider Bratislava or the Wachau Valley instead.

We just returned from a 7-day trip to Vienna. During the week, we took a day trip to Bratislava, which was an inexpensive (EUR 18 for a day ticket) and easy 1-hour train ride away. There aren't major sites, but the old city is charming to walk around (we followed the walk in the RS guide), and we had cake in a Konditorei and dinner at a traditional restaurant. We also went to Melk Abbey and the Wachau Valley, which involved taking the train to Melk, and then a boat ride on the Danube from Melk to Krems, followed by a train ride back to Vienna. The RS guide describes how to do this, but we found the logistics to be a bit complicated, as it was a longish walk from the Abbey to the boat dock (on a hot day), and then a bus ride in Krems back to the train station. It would be easier with a car, or perhaps a bicycle, but we had a good time. Having said this, you could easily find ways to stay busy for 5 days in Vienna, especially if you have an interest in art or history. There are many possible attractions to visit.
